"I don't know, but I intend to find out. They almost got me this time."
The rumble of a car from the street made D.J. start. She grabbed McCall's arm and yanked him with her into the house. "Sit there." She pointed to a chair out of range of the windows. He complied without argument.
Locking the door behind them, D.J. drew the living room drapes, then moved to the side of the window and peered through the gap between the material and the wall and the window seat.
Just as she'd suspected, a black van crept down the street in front of the house. When it pulled even with the window D.J. strained her eyes to see the driver. But the tint of the glass sabotaged her effort.
Since the porch was now empty, the van drove off in a puff of exhaust. This time D.J. looked for a license plate. There wasn't one.
"Same van as last night?"
McCall's voice right behind her ear made D.J. jump. "Quit sneaking up on me! You're as bad as . . ." She trailed off. She didn't need to explain about guardian angels right now. Right now she needed to call her captain.
She pushed past McCall and headed for the phone. He grabbed her arm, jerking her back to face him.
"Was it?" he repeated his earlier question.
"Yes, the same one, as far as I could tell." She tugged on her arm and he released her. "You know whoever it is will be back."
McCall turned and looked toward the window. "Yes, I suppose they will. I wonder what they want."
